Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has picked out the biggest thing holding the Reds back in their charge for the Premier League title, after he watched his former side limp to a 0-0 draw against Everton at Goodison Park.
The stalemate means that Jurgen Klopp’s side have now dropped points in four of their last six league outings, not only allowing Manchester City back into the title race, but letting them to jump one point above them despite holding a seven point lead at one stage.
Klopp’s men appear to be running out of steam, and are noticeably lacking a creative figure in the midfield – Mohamed Salah missed a couple of clear-cut chances, but he cannot be held accountable given just how few openings the Reds created.
What did Carragher say?
When asked if his former side had a problem, the Sky Sports pundit said: “Yes, in terms of the make-up of the midfield. But it’s not just a problem now.
“In the final of the Champions League last season you look at the set-up and they just lacked one player.
“They lost Coutinho and never replaced him. There’s not even someone off the bench who can have that type of impact.
“They tried in the summer (with Fekir) but they couldn’t get him.
“Even if Liverpool win the league, I still think it’s a position they will try to fill in the summer.”
Hard to argue with him
One thing Liverpool certainly aren’t lacking is a workhorse midfielder, willing to put the hard yards in and go the distance for the team – players such as Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Gini Wijnaldum and James Milner are all examples of this.
However, they are all too similar to each other, and are all severely lacking creativity. The aforementioned four have managed just six goals between them in the league all season, as well as just six assists which simply isn’t good enough.
The fact that they targeted Nabil Fekir back in the summer proves that Klopp was aware of this issue, but sadly, it was never rectified after the Frenchman’s failed medical – Liverpool never sought a backup target, a decision which could haunt them come the end of the season.
